White Paper: The Sources in Student Writing - Secondary Education

“Which online sources do college students most frequently use in their written work?”

“What do students’ sources suggest about their approach to online research?”

This study examines the Internet sources secondary education students use in their written work and the implications of their choices. It is based on an analysis of over 44 million content matches from more than 9 million student papers submitted to Turnitin between July 2011 and June 2012. Included are recommendations for educators on how to improve student research and citation skills.

"Turnitin is a deterrent, but it's also a great instructional tool. I really to want my students to become better writers so I explain to them: this is for you. This is for your benefit only. I'm trying to help you for college. I'm trying to help you for life."
