Stopping Plagiarism at the Source: Why Assignments Matter
Every teacher dreads it—the plagiarized paper, the confrontation with a student, the demise of trust and learning. As schools move toward an online future, educators are understandably concerned about increases in plagiarism. Yet while the problem is real, there are solutions beyond forcing teachers into the role of police.
In this presentation, we will reconsider our assignments with the goal of discovering how we can stop plagiarism before it happens. We’ll also touch on the role of school and classroom culture, and teacher attitudes and preparation.
We'll aim to learn strategies that help students:
- Desire to write original work
- Engage in activities that avoid the need to plagiarize
- Avoid bad decision-making by focusing on learning
Barry Gilmore is the author of Plagiarism: Why it Happens and How to Prevent It and Plagiarism: A How-Not-To Guide for Students, as well as five other books for teachers. Currently the head of middle school at Hutchison School in Memphis, TN, Dr. Gilmore taught English and social studies for nearly twenty years in a wide variety of grades. He has been named a National Council of Teachers of English High School Teacher of Excellence, the Tennessee Holocaust Commission Teacher of the Year, and an American Star of Teaching by the U.S. Department of Education.
Jason Chu is Education Director for Turnitin. His focus is on working to build resources for educators, and his personal passion is to find better ways to enhance student achievement. He will be moderating this webcast.
