Building Broad-based Rubric Adoption to Enhance Programmatic Assessment

Building broad-based adoption for rubrics can often be difficult. With more technological tools to learn, students to instruct, and objectives to standardize, there are challenges in helping educators incorporate rubrics even at the assignment level.

Learn about a faculty-friendly approach to colleagues helping colleagues understand the benefits of rubric scoring through re-envisioning the assignment-course-program assessment relationship. The session will provide strategies for harnessing the power of rubrics to meet all three assessment needs and linking their learning objectives simultaneously to assignment, course, and program objectives in order to gain actionable insights. Examples include recasting a course into an assessed capstone experience to centralize program-level assessment, crafting rubrics to measure growth in critical thinking in both online and face-to-face situations, and the importance of flexibility in the pursuit of continuous improvement.
