Partners in Education: Creating Common Core Rubrics

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) have their roots in collaboration among representatives from higher education, K-12 and community experts, so when the English Professional Learning Council (EPLC) set out to create rubrics based upon the CCSS, they partnered with local higher education, high school and community groups.

This 30-minute webcast explains the process and intent behind the creation of Common Core rubrics and how they can help schools adapt to the new standards.

Presenters

Dawn Lewis has worked as a secondary English teacher for Capistrano Unified School District for 20 years with a focus on reading intervention and senior composition. She has developed curriculum for courses in Intensive Literacy, Academic Literacy, High School Exit Exam Test Prep ELA, Student Success, AVID, The Bible and Literature, English I, and Intermediate Composition. Dawn serves as co-chair of the English Professional Learning Council, an inter-segmental group of educators who develop curriculum to address college remediation and to ease the transition from high school to college.


Renee Bangerter is a Professor of English at Saddleback College and has been teaching writing for 15 years. She collaborates with K-12 teachers developing curriculum to bridge the gap between high school and college in reading, writing and grammar. Renee creates the professional development webinars for Turnitin, emphasizing how instructors can innovatively teach students about plagiarism.
