Engaging Online Learners

According to a recent study by Marketdata Enterprises Inc, 30% of college students are taking or have taken an online course. Research firm Ambient Insight estimates that this number will skyrocket to more than 22 million in the next five years. The blended and 100% online classroom is not just for higher ed; more and more high schools are offering some form of online instruction. But how do we know that this approach is captivating or engaging our students?

This webcast provides a path to successful online teaching, allowing teachers and professors to not only match the learning outcomes of face-to-face education, but even surpass those results. As technological capabilities expand, so can the experiences of the online instructor.

Presenters

Christine Buell is the assistant principal for student life at Sacred Heart Cathedral.  She earned a BA in English Literature from UC Santa Cruz and a MA in Educational Leadership from the University of San Francisco. In her seventeen years as a teacher Christine has taught Art History, English, Social Studies, and Speech in debate. Over the past five years, she has taught both blended and online classes, co-founding BACSOC (Bay Area Catholic Schools Online Consortium), an organization of teachers whose primary goal is promoting online education.


Summer Dittmer has taught Drama, Online Expository Writing, English and Honors English for 11 years. Aside from teaching 12th grade Literature, she is the Student Activities Coordinator at Mercy High School in Burlingame, CA. She has trained teachers in developing online curriculum, along with assisting in implementing effective one-to-one iPad programs. Summer also creates professional development webinars for Turnitin, emphasizing how instructors can effectively integrate technology into their curriculum.
