The Future of Writing: I Wandered Lonely In The Cloud

Student Success Week 2015 | Exploring the Intersection of Writing with Technology

Anya Kamenetz writes for a living--everything from Tweets to books--in the age when pixels are replacing print. That means she lives in the world for which students are preparing.

Collaboration and crowdsourcing. Ubiquitous metrics and instant feedback. Simultaneous translation, voice recognition, instant and incessant revision. Privacy and disclosure; avatars and characters. Emoji, multimedia, and transmedia; the re-ascendance of image over symbol. Data journalism. Clickbait and crap detection. Mobile, social, and the war for eyeballs. Metaphor, syntax and diction; accessibility and codeswitching. Authenticity and voice.

Anya will talk about how all of these ideas figure into her writing practice and share some ideas for how writing assignments might reflect them.

Audience:  Educators, Administrators and Students
